Games like Wordle: 25 to play after today's grid

Finished today's Wordle? These free games keep what makes it good and change one thing: more boards, meaning over spelling, numbers, maps or music.

By Flavio Moreno 5 min read

Wordle's best feature is that it ends. Six guesses, a grid to share, and nothing more to do until midnight. That is also its most annoying feature at four minutes past eight, when the coffee is still hot and the day has not started yet.

The closest games to Wordle are Dordle and Quordle, which keep its rules and add more boards. For a twist on a single board, try Xordle or Antiwordle. Contexto ranks your guesses by meaning instead of spelling, Nerdle swaps the word for a sum, and Worldle plays the same loop with country outlines. All 25 below are free in a browser, and all but one reset on a schedule.

Each pick changes one thing about Wordle that none of the others on the list do. Games that only swap the word list were left out, and so were games that need an account. They are grouped by which part of Wordle you actually enjoy.

Which games are most like Wordle?

Dordle, Quordle, Octordle and Sedecordle are Wordle with more boards: every guess you type lands on all of them at once.

  • Dordle: two words, seven guesses. A good opener earns twice.
  • Quordle: four words, nine guesses. This is where many players find their limit for a weekday.
  • Octordle: eight words, thirteen guesses. Bring a second coffee.
  • Sedecordle: sixteen words in twenty-one tries. Less a puzzle than an endurance event, and oddly satisfying when the last board falls.

If more boards sound tiring, change the rules on the one board instead. Antiwordle turns the goal inside out: you try to avoid the word for as long as you can, and every correct letter you uncover locks you a step closer to it. Xordle hides two words that share no letters and colours every guess against both, so each colour has to be read with two answers in mind.

If you like the letters more than the word

  • Waffle starts with every letter already on the board, most of them in the wrong place. You swap them into position with a limited number of moves. It feels like Wordle played backwards.
  • Crosswordle is Wordle played backwards for real: you get the colours of a finished game and work out which guesses could have produced them.
  • Squaredle gives you a grid of letters and asks you to trace every word hiding in it, Boggle style.
  • Strands, from The New York Times, does something similar with a theme, plus one long word (the spangram) that runs from one side of the board to the other.

Which word games score guesses by meaning?

  • Contexto ranks every guess by how close it sits in meaning to the secret word. One guess comes back 900th, the next 40th, and slowly you close in. There is no guess limit, which is a mercy.
  • Semantle works the same way but hands you a raw similarity score instead of a rank. That makes it noticeably harder, and the people who love it really love it.
  • NYT Connections asks for meaning in groups: sixteen words hide four sets of four, and four mistakes end the game. Connections Game is a free take on the same format from another maker, for the days the official one goes quickly.

Is there a maths version of Wordle?

Yes, and Nerdle is the one most people mean.

  • Nerdle hides a sum instead of a word. Something like 12+35=47 fills the eight tiles, and the equals sign takes one of them. The colours work exactly as they do in Wordle.
  • Mathler tells you the answer and hides the calculation. You have six guesses to find which combination of digits and operators produces it.

If it is the format you like, not the words

The loop at the heart of Wordle, where each guess narrows the next one, works on nearly any subject. These games prove it.

  • Worldle: a country's outline. Each wrong guess tells you how far away you are and which way to look.
  • Globle: no outline at all, only a globe that colours your guesses hotter as they get closer.
  • Framed: a film, revealed one still at a time across six frames.
  • Bandle: a song that adds an instrument with every guess.
  • Spotle: one artist out of a thousand. You get ten tries, and every miss narrows the field.
  • LoLdle and Pokedle: a League of Legends champion or a Pokémon, deduced from attributes such as type or release year.
  • Costcodle: the price of something at Costco. After each guess you are told higher or lower, and the answer is usually cheaper than you think.

There is a separate guide to daily geography games if Worldle is the one that stuck.

Can you play Wordle more than once a day?

Not the daily puzzle itself, which is one a day for everyone. Wordle Unlimited does what its name says: as many rounds as you like, with no reset. It is handy for practising openers, though no use for a streak. Alldle marks games like this as unlimited, so they don't get mixed in with the daily ones.

For a longer, purely word-based list, Alldle also ranks word games by how much they share with Wordle, and the word games category holds 526 of them as of October 2026.

How to build a lineup without burning out

The trap with daily games is collecting too many. Fifteen tabs at breakfast stops being fun at about day four. A lineup where each game does something different tends to last:

  1. Wordle, or one of the variants from the first section.
  2. Something that isn't about words at all, like Worldle or Nerdle.
  3. A wildcard you swap out every few weeks.
  4. On weekends, if there is time, one of the long ones. Octordle is ideal.

Alldle lets you save games to a lineup so they sit together on one screen, with a streak that counts the days you show up. If you want to see what other people keep coming back to, the most played games are ranked by how often people open them from Alldle, not by anyone's opinion, this article's included.
